Total Solar Eclipse that occurs on 22 July, 2009 is the first grahanam in this new Hindu year. It is the longest total solar eclipse of the century. It will be visible in India from early morning 05:28 hrs to 07:40 hrs. The Moon’s umbral shadow on Sun begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and ends in the Pacific Ocean. As per traditional Hindu calendar July 22 is an Amavasya day or no moon day.

In some parts of India it will be a total solar eclipse and where as in some parts it will be partial solar eclipse. It will be a total solar eclipse in parts of Gujarat (Surat), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal) and Bihar (Patna) in India. It will be viewed as partial solar eclipse in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad. The total solar eclipse will last nearly four minutes from 6.26 am to 6.30 am when the sun will not be visible at all.

According to Hindu scriptures the grahanam begins at 5.25 hours in the early morning and ends at 7.40 hours.
Grahan Sparsh kaal – 05.28 hrs
Suryodayam (Sunrise) – 05.52 hrs
Grahan madhyakaal – 06.24 hrs
Grahan Moksh kaal – 07.21 hrs

All Hindu temples remain closed during the Grahan and will reopen only after the Grahan Moksha kaal. Special pujas and rituals are performed. On the day, people take the holy dip in River Ganga and Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra.

It is customary to fast on the day of eclipse. Many Hindus fast even from water and break their fasts only after taking the holy dip in rivers or lakes. They perform ritual bath, puja, japa, havan and other ritual after the Grahan Moksh Kaal. Usually, religious Hindus do not perform any work during Surya Grahan and they purify themselves by chanting the Ashtakshara Mantra or Hare Krishna Maha Mantra dedicated to Shri Krishna. Scriptures recommend reciting Surya Stotras such as Aditya Hridayam; Maha Mritunjaya Mantram and Vishnu Stotras to bring in auspiciousness

Pregnant women are given few precautionary measures as the grahan can be harmful to the foetus. They are advised not to go out of home and not to see the eclipse. They are advised not to do any kind of work. They are advised to sit or lie down on a mat containing Darbha grass or Kusha Grass. For normal and safe delivery, they are advised to recite Santana Gopala Swamy Mantram and Surya Stotras like Aditya Hridayam and other Surya Mantras, Maha Mritunjaya Stotram.
