Celtic Mythology is the religion of ‘Iron Age Celts’. People of iron age unlike others also maintained a polytheistic mythology and structured religion. They were war loving people who had well described script and qualified and distinguished professionals in their society. They have faith in God and also have spiritual believes. That is why Elves and fairies like creatures are present in their folklore.
Ancient Celtic Mythology:
The main features of ancient Celtic Mythology are summarized below:
- The warriors of ancient Celtic mythology were war loving people. They trust their brute force more than their elaborate tactics and clever strategies.
- Celtic society itself means that ‘knowing or finding the oak tree’. They use various symbols in their manuscripts which represent ancient customs and beliefs that date back to 300 years back.
- Ancient Celtic mythology has two art styles.
- There were 7 Celtic sea nations; where people live on shores of these ancient seas.
- Brittney, by the Southern France is one of those Sea nations.
- Their philosophy indicates that they believe that existence arose from the inter play between darkness and light, night and day, cold and warmth, death and life.
- Their society incorporated professionals, lawyers, judges, medical doctors, ambassadors, historians and so forth.
- In their philosophy the dark period winter begins on Nov 1 and light period summer begins on May 1.
- There are 4 major festival which depict their agricultural cycle. These are- Samhain , Imbloc, Beltane, Lughnasadh.
Elves In Celtic Mythology:
‘Elves’ are the Celtic Mythology Creatures their description is found in their folklore. According to this mythology Elves are the keepers of nature and balance in nature. There are different types of elves like- wood elves, sun elves, moon elves etc.
There is a description that says that ‘Elves were short or tiny ‘ and can be seen as benevolent when pleased. So they would care for the house, during chores in night . if they were offended they were malevolent, disrupting the house hold.
